History Odyssey Middle Ages (“Middle Ages”) is a year-long homeschool history curriculum incorporating history with language arts and world geography. The course is geared toward middle school students ready to start learning independently. Reading and writing assignments, mapwork, and timeline construction come together to create a scholarly homeschool history curriculum covering the middle ages.
Middle Ages is a secular homeschool curriculum, meaning it does not present religious beliefs or texts as historically factual accounts. Rather, it references them as another source or perspective to be considered.
Middle Ages is the second of a four-part series of history guides. While each course can be completed without having done the others, the writing, time management, and critical thinking skills required become more advanced with each time period.
This resource is a student-independent and investigative history guide program. It includes 113 lessons spanning the course of your academic year. Each lesson will typically be 2 hours, 3-4 times a week and may need to be accomplished in multiple sittings each day. Middle Ages studies will cover ~250 CE – mid 16thcentury. Covering the major empires (Byzantine, Aztec, Spanish, etc.), the dynasties of China, major events like the black plague and the Crusades, also follows history from the Renaissance to the Reformation. Students will source their information initially from the Kingfisher History Encyclopedia. As they develop their researching skills, they will utilize mostly primary sources. There is required literature that can be purchased or sourced from your local library. Skills developed are critical thinking, reading, writing, geography, and timeline work.
