Brightly colorful with engaging stories, this set of 26 readers (one for each letter) leads students down the path to literacy one letter at a time. Eighteen-page books are 7″x 9″. Mat Man® – Handwriting Without Tears’ letter stroke mascot – introduces each letter with a cheerful “Are you ready? Are you set? It’s time for the alphabet!” Uppercase and lowercase versions of the book’s letter are provided on each page. Stories are simple – one sentence per page – with illustrations fleshing out the story. Letter sounds abound – in both phonetical short-vowels and other more advanced phonics or sight-word-ish options such as jellyfish, goat, or bagels. Designed to increase phonemic awareness with a hearty injection of fun, each book ends with questions that focus on letter learning, meaning making, and figuring out feelings. The back cover of the book sums up its focus with a handy chart: words to sound out, sight words to say, and story words to hear. The reader set includes a short family guide that includes a how-to-use overview, along with some fun family ideas such as a letter-of-the-day meal and story questions to ask.
